This conference was organized by the late Dr. Kwang-Hae K. Kim and was held at the UC Irvine campus during August 11–13, 2005. This was one of the earliest conferences held within a university campus, and most activities were planned and hosted largely by student volunteers. While this created a few chaotic moments related to seating, meals, and accommodations, the format provided a good model for future conferences.
There were 580 registered guests for the conference, including those who came to meet the well-known scientist Dr. Woo-Suk Hwang at the time. Governor Hak-Kyu Sohn of Gyeonggi-do, then an aspiring candidate for the President of Korea, delivered a plenary talk. Invited speakers also included Nobel laureate Sherwood Rowland (UC Irvine), Zang-Hee Cho (UC Irvine and Gachon Medical School), Young-Hwa Cho (KIST), Chan Mo Park (POSTECH), Key-Hyup Kim (KITECH), Kwyro Lee (LG), Chun-Hwan Lee (ETRI), and others.
The conference was organized into nine symposiums and three forums. A 384-page CD titled “Frontiers in Science and Engineering” was produced after the conference, listing the abstracts and proceedings.
