For the first time since 1994, the 2002 UKC was held in Seoul, Korea, in conjunction with the World Congress of KOFST, with the theme “Technology for a Safe World,” during July 8–11, 2011, at the KOFST building in Yeoksam-dong, Seoul. Most airfares between the USA and Korea were reimbursed to all KSEA participants by KOFST. Although it was expensive and difficult to coordinate, the 2002 UKC held in Korea provided attending KSEA members with an opportunity to initiate active networking with Korean scientists in Korea as well as those from other foreign countries, and to tour many places in Korea.
Over 160 KSEA members attended the Seoul conference, and 153 papers were presented by U.S. participants [7]. There were 41 sessions, with more than half of the speakers coming from the U.S.
