The conference was held at the Marriott Hotel at Tysons Corner in Vienna, Virginia, from October 22 to 24, 1998. Approximately 200 people attended the three-day conference.
Welcome remarks were delivered by Korean Ambassador to the United States Hong-Koo Lee, and congratulatory remarks were given by Dr. James Phillips, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
Four plenary session speakers were invited: Dr. Seungtaik Yang (Information and Communications University, Korea), Dr. Chang-Soo Kim (LG), Dr. Harvey Dershin (Juran Institute), and Dr. Phillip Summers (IBM Watson).
The conference was organized into five symposia, during which a total of 63 papers were presented in the following areas (number of papers in parentheses): Life Science and Biotechnology (22), Software Engineering (9), Information Sciences (10), Energy (13), and Design and Manufacturing (9). In addition, 20 poster session papers were presented.
Due to the ongoing global recession and the IMF financial crisis in Korea, the conference was significantly scaled down, resulting in lower overall attendance. In total, 53 papers were presented across diverse scientific and technological disciplines.
